Theta Chapter History

~ The Beginning ~

In the fall of 1944, women were admitted into the UC Band for the first time in history. The women in the band received news of the new Tau Beta Sigma organization enthusiastically. Guided by the Brothers of the Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, sixteen women began operating as a service organization during the 1946-47 school year. In May of 1947, the women petitioned Tau Beta Sigma for a charter. On May 31, 1947, the Theta Chapter was installed at the University of Cincinnati, becoming the eighth chapter of Tau Beta Sigma. Mr. Francis R. Todd conducted the installation, Past Grand President of Kappa Kappa Psi and a charter member of Upsilon. Doris Ragsdale, Tau Beta Sigma's first National President, was in office during this time.

The charter members of Theta were:

     Janet E. Boland

The officers chosen for the 1947-1948 school year were:

     President:   Jean Carol Hauck

In 1948, Theta was awarded the Balfour Trophy for being the most outstanding Tau Beta Sigma chapter in the country, although they had only been active for one year. The next year, in 1949, Theta initiated the Outstanding Senior Award, given annually to a UC Band senior. The first recipient of the award, Patricia Lippert, was one of the first women in the UC Band and a charter member of Theta.

~ The 1960s ~

The 1960s were active and rewarding years for Theta. Within the bienniums 1961 - 1963, 1963 - 1965, and 1967 - 1969 national recognition was given to Theta in honor of being one of the Top Ten Chapters. In March of 1964, Theta and Upsilon hosted the District VII Convention at UC. Together the two chapters of Theta and Upsilon also established the Delta Epsilon chapter at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in the year 1969.

~ The 1970s ~

In 1979, Cindy Claypool and Sandy Drake founded the Cincinnati Alumni Association.

~ The 1980s ~

At the District VII Convention, at Michigan State University in April of 1980, Theta was awarded the TBS Chapter Participation Award for bringing the greatest number of members the farthest distance. During the spring of 1981, Theta installed the Zeta Rho chapter at Kentucky State University and the Zeta Sigma chapter at Xavier University. On August 2-7 of 1981, after months of hard work by chairpersons Robin Roush Bierschenk, Paul Wesolowski, and Louis Barone, and members of Theta and Upsilon, the University of Cincinnati hosted the 1981 National Convention. A few years later in 1984, Theta established the Eta Eta Chapter at Central State University. The 1980s ended with one of the most rewarding years Theta has experienced, 1989 was a true Banner Year . It began as both Theta and Upsilon were nominated as Top Ten Chapters in the Nation for the biennium of 1987 - 1989. At the 1989 North Central District Convention, Theta and Upsilon were awarded the Most Outstanding Display Award and the right to host the 1990 North Central District Convention. Theta also received the Counselor's Cup Award. At the 1989 National Convention in Oklahoma, Theta and Upsilon received the J. Lee Burke Display Award for the most outstanding convention display. Also, in 1989, we reformed the Alumni Association after several years of being inactive.

~ The 1990s ~

The pace and success of our banner year continued into the 1990s. In February of 1990, Theta helped install the Theta Epsilon chapter at Cumberland College. Also, Theta and Upsilon hosted the 1990 North Central District Convention entitled, "Steamin Around the Bend." It was here at the 1990 North Central District Convention that Theta received for the second time the Counselor's Cup, an honor received again for the third time in 1991. Also at the 1991 National Convention at the University of Maryland, Theta was given the Leadership Award, the highest honor which can be bestowed on a chapter, making Theta the top chapter in the country. This also granted Theta the honor of Top Ten for the biennium of 1989 - 1991. Two years later, at the 1993 National Convention, Theta again received Top Ten, this time for the biennium of 1991 - 1993. On October 15, 1994 Theta and Upsilon hosted and participated in "Marching Madness." The very next year at the 1995 North Central District Convention, both chapters received the Outstanding Service Award for hosting the event. Also in 1995, Theta and Upsilon were awarded the right to publish The Kadenza , the district newsletter. In 1996, Theta and Upsilon raised money through the annual mulch fundraiser to buy podiums. This was reflected again in 1997 when Theta and Upsilon used the fundraising money to buy a clarinet and a piccolo, stands music, and helped to finance the flip folder music system, followed by the UC Bands outstanding balances. As the decade, century, and millennium came to a close the Theta chapter continued to strive for success. At the 1999 North Central District Convention the hard work, organization and teamwork from both Theta and Upsilon yielded the right to host the 2000 North Central District Convention. Theta also received a joint award with our sister chapter at Indiana University, and the award as Top Academic Chapter.

~ The 2000s ~

In the spring of 2000 Theta and Upsilon hosted the North Central District Convention entitled, "WNCD in Cincinnati." The convention was a success and Theta returned home with the Counselor's Cup, the Superior Achievement Award and numerous individual academic excellence awards. At the 2001 NCD Convention at the University of Michigan, Theta and Upsilon presented a Joint Brotherhood/Sisterhood Ceremony to the district. The ceremony was presented to give schools a means to help relations between Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi chapters. The Ceremony was voted upon and accepted by the entire district as a Ceremony that those chapters, so wishing to do so, could use. At this convention, Theta and Upsilon also presented a bid to publish The Kadenza . The bid was later accepted in May and Upsilon and Theta began publication of the 2001-2002 Kadenza. Later on that year Theta went on to received four awards at the 2001 National Convention. The first two awards are for having total membership, which equals 10% of the largest performing ensemble in which we support. The third award is for increasing our total membership by 20%. The fourth award is the Band Biennium Award. In the fall of 2001, Jodi Schmidt and Bob Dennedy formed a loose-knit Joint Alumni Association. Its main purpose is to provide an electronic listserve communication tool for alumni brothers and sisters to keep in touch with each other. At the 2002 NCD Convention hosted at Indiana University, our Sponsor, Becky Williams, received the Kathy Stevens’ Award. In the spring of 2002, Theta began to compose a piece of music as a gift for Upsilon’s 75th anniversary. This project was kept a secret from the Upsilon brothers until its premier on March 2, 2003. An alumnus of Upsilon, Randy Bass, wrote the concert band piece, entitled High Adventure . Active and alumni sisters worked together to fund the project; even the district contributed to this project. A small group of alumni and all the active and candidate sisters practiced in secret and moved equipment to the premier location before the performance at Upsilon’s celebration lunch. The response from the brothers was overwhelming and created a new bond of brotherhood/sisterhood among the members. The piece was premiered several times since that March afternoon, including performances by the Marine Band in Washington, DC, and by the National Reading Band at the 2003 National Convention held in Norfolk, VA. Some sisters are working to have this piece placed on the high school band competition list and promote the piece to band directors in many arenas. In the spring of 2003, Theta won the Counselor’s Cup at District Convention hosted at Northern Illinois University. This was the fifth time Theta received this award.
