Drum Majors of the UC Bearcat Band
Martin Scheider - 1938-1940

  • Martin Scheider began his career as a drum major for Western Hills High School in Cincinnati. Scheider was a self-taught drum major, practicing relentlessly in his back yard in Price Hill. His inspiration came from those that he saw in bands of his youth, and began his "training" with his father's cane.
  • Scheider introduced the "sabre spin" to the UC crowds, as well as the toss of two batons over the goal to begin the game. The latter would become a tradition for UC Drum Majors until the 1960s. As a student of engineering at UC, Scheider also took on the education of several future drum majors to spread the art.
