The UC Band has a long history of performing excellence. In addition to talented musicians, creative
performances, and a strong sense of pride, the UC Band has been accompanied by
many outstanding Drum Majors. Some of these Drum Majors have even achieved
national recognition for their performance and skill. These archives are
dedicated to the men and women who have given so much to accompany an already
stellar performing group, the University of Cincinnati Bearcat Bands.
The position of Drum Major originated in the first years of the UC Band, when it was still a
function of the ROTC on campus. The position has changed over the years from that of a
focal point on the field, to a focal point from the field. In the late
1970s, the Drum Majors of the UC Band went from dedicated performers, to
responsible for the performance. Henceforth, the Drum Majors have taken on
the conducting responsibilities of the UC Band on, and off the field. The
Drum Majors are now responsible for the student leadership on-field as
well. They encourage the maintenance of the sections, help the director
run rehearsals, and speak as the director's representative in his absence.
The position is filled at the discretion of the Director of Bands by means of
a tryout and interview, thereby ensuring his fair representation.
Thanks to Chris Kannel for compiling this information.
